Mark Gast - Salem's Wych (www.salemswych.com)
1) Heaven and Hell - Live at Radio City Music Hall - Amazing live version of what I feel
to be one of the best bands of the 80's. Sure Ozzy era started it and was amazing in its
own right, but the Dio era Sabbath set the bar for the 80's with a different feel all its
own. The songs are timeless and it wasn't just me there to see them in L.A., the guys from
Metallica and about every metal player that ever was, was there rockin out and reliving
the good old days.
2)Megadeth - United Abominations - Dave Mustaine is back. If you ever doubted that Dave
was the master of thrash just listen to "Gears of War". Amazing album and
amazing band live. Forget the if Dave is a christian, the Jr. crap, and let Megadeth's
music do the talking on this one. It screams!
3)Exodus - The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A - Gary Holt has brought this new version of
Exodus full circle and has released some of the most aggressive and powerful thrash ever
on this outing. Rob Dukes the new singer even seems to come into his own, as this is just
the kind of stuff that makes you run for the pit.
4) Machine Head - The Blackening - I have to admit this one had to grow on me a bit, but
once it did, oh man. The multi-changes within the song and twists make this an amazing
album, like something new around every corner. You can feel the roots of 80's metal here,
but with a cool new twist that makes things fresh. I can't wait for the next one.
5) Candlemass - King of the Grey Island - The new singers style is way different from what
I was expecting for Candlemass, but once I got past that I discovered a real gem. This is
a very underrated album that every true metal fan should check out. Actually go back and
experience Candlemass from the beginning through this album, as they deserve a lot more
acclaim than they have gotten.
6) Airbourne - Runnin' Wild - Very cool metal rock in the vein of AC/DC. Every once in a
while a band makes that one album that is just cool because it sounds great, even if it is
in that AC/DC style. Def Leppard with "High N' Dry" and Krokus with "One
Vice at a Time". Well here is another slab of AC/DC inspired songs that deserve a
place on that shelf. Check it out, tap your toes, unfold those arms, and forget that you
are suppose to be a metal head that never smiles, have some fun, drink some beer and have
a Vegemite sandwich already.
7) King Diamond - Give Me Your Soul...Please - The King is back , well he has been for the
past two albums. Amazing work, probably his best ever. The band is tight and the songs are
classics, even on first listen. King Diamond and his band are a class act that has been
giving some of the most original and consistent music in the metal genre ever. Check it
out, and oh yeah check out the guitar solos.
8) Skeleton Witch - Beyond the Permafrost - I have to admit I picked this band up on the
name alone, but once I heard them I was hooked. This Ohio band has defiantly put their own
spin on thrash and the 80's metal greats and not like a few other mall-core metal
bands that have eating up all the limelight. They seem to be a mix of 80's metal and some
of the newer bands of the past 10 years or so. Very heavy and really worth a listen.
9)Slayer - Christ Illusion - 20 plus years and Jeff, Tom, Kerry and finally back again
Dave are still beating us over the head with some of the most brutal metal on the planet.
I caught them in Long Beach this past year, and they haven't slowed down one bit from the
80's. Plus the fact that they are still pissing people off with their album covers and
controversial subject matter about jihad, what is not to like.In the immortal words
"Angel of Death...AAAAAAAH". Keep on keeping on my brothers.
10)High on Fire - Death is the Communion - Sludgy and trodden riffs, this was the stuff of
my youth that made me love Sabbath and later the MuddGodz. This album just sets a tone that
makes you feel that 70's vibe of when metal was coming into its own. This is an amazing
album full of well crafted songs. I have defiantly got to catch these guys live. So even
if you are a speed freak or a died in wool thrash crack head, take a breather, pop this
album in and lude out.
