Frehley hurls his giant comet-sized spaceballs across the milky way onto the devils poker table, again.
Straight ahead rocker from the shocker
This Monster of a solo record has no trouble walking tall in space boots. Whilst Emperor Gene, Ming's brother, is even more merciless and will stop at nothing to banish Ace to where no man ever wants to go--Uranus. As I was prepping to be sucked into another black hole anomaly, I was miraculously saved by the fire in his guitar. You can hear his soul flying free with solar wings.
The title track on "Space Invader" begins redemption for a 20 year absence - and does its best to redeem Ace as a songwriter/performer. It invades your space and forwards you back to the futuristic Klassic riffs of the 70's. This should have been his comeback album 5 years ago when people started to give a shit again. Instead that release was last minute thrown together to accompany his book. The best song was his cover of "Fox On the Run". Really I would hope word of mouth is good enough. Because the songs are. The title track opens us up to what we've been waiting for. A big wall of sound banging against our heads and a nostalgia ringing our ears to the pleasant sounds of us going back to school. Immediate Klassic and Katchy riffs, progressions, solos and conceptual lyrics start us off with the title track - and this well produced fireball end us the same way. "Gimme a Feeling", "I Wanna Hold You", "Change", "Toys", "What Every Girl Wants", "Inside the Vortex", "Past the Milky Way" (my fav pick), and his always trusted instrumentals show up here in the name of "The "Starship". It is this Asshole's belief that these songs can completely compete with any recent Kiss releases.
For the most part this is a straight ahead rocker from the shocker. He will always have that New York groove, but here he is celebrating some smooth space truckin. The bad songs are just as bad as the timing and marketing behind this recording. "Immortal Pleasures", "Reckless", and "The Joker" are really just depressing. Come back down to earth, Ace. If you want to continue cover songs stick with ELO and Sweet. Just sad. Steve Miller wasn't a joker. He was the joke. And this is where the album is fractured. And I cant hold it back here. No matter how bad the original, and its bad, This is a big error that might eventually turn Ace into a punchline. If you keep this up you'll be standing in the breadline. And people without computers still wont buy your music online.
Catch Ace during his California Winter Tour where he will play everyday it rains.
