While not too far from ordinary, this band has attempted something rather ambitious; a blend of both the catchy and more ‘kvlt’ sides of black metal. The result is an initially impressive record laden with satisfying guitar hooks, but also one that ultimately lacks staying power.
I would have liked to have enjoyed this record. Though ‘Krek’ is undoubtedly cold in nature, I would hesitate to call Khold a true black metal band; they are more specifically ‘groove/stoner-black-metal’. The title track, which kicks off the album in fine and gritty fashion, is really a quality example of black metal played to its mid-tempo, bass-heavy best. It represents the band’s unique, but ultimately tiresome take on the genre, blending thick and wandering bass lines with a gravely guitar and voice that, while somewhat harsh, is not indecipherable, staying away from black metal vocal extremes, which is a prudent choice considering the music it compliments. The first track is, however, only two minutes in duration and once it has run its course the listener immediately is interested to hear it again. And he will. Nine times.
While no one can fault Krek for being another Darkthrone clone, one can hardly laud them for diversity. Their formula is an interesting one, but not for 40 minutes. By drummer Sarke’s own admission, “The Khold trademark will always be the same.” While I applaud their resilience, I cannot help but hope for something a little more substantial. It is best that this album remains brief, though, for by the fifth song, ‘Krek’ has fully revealed itself and all its tricks, and from thereon out feels rather obligatory and static.
If Khold stayed to EP’s and splits, I believe the abbreviated duration would do their career good. In the meantime, I’ll listen to the first track every now and then and be satiated. For those interested in mid-paced, atmospheric, and not overbearing black metal of this nature, I would direct you instead towards the likes of Ajattara or Craft.
