Well anyone who reads my ramblings from time to time will understand that I know NOTHING about black metal. But since we are short staffed and the great guys over at Southern Lord presented us this little nugget, well I thought it would be fitting that I say something about it. Twilight is a primitive black metal band made up of some pretty large heavyweights within the black metal realms. Wrest, known for his solo work as Leviathan and Lurker Of Chalice, plays drums, guitar, bass, and synth here. Azentrius, known for his work as Nachtmystium, plays guitar and bass. Malefic, known for his solo stuff as Xasthur, serves up guitar, synth, and vocals. Imperial, known for his solo work as Krieg, dishes out vocals and bass, while Hildolf, known in circles as Draguar, provides vocals.
So with the costumes and corpse paint in order, Twilight presents us "Sunn 47", a black metal all star affair that should please fans of the macabre and sadistic. The album paints a pretty extreme picture of blender fast speed metal, all wrapped up in an orchestra of dark keyboards and haunting spoken passages. Tracks like "Winter Before" show a more trancelike, ambient style while other selections like "Larval Liaise" bring back the old school sounds of Bathory and Venom, creating that raw, slow paced doom metal that sounds like it was recorded in an underground cellar. But that really is the idea here, to bring back what makes black metal delicious and appealing to begin with, that roughshod, primitive rebellion that made bands like Darkthrone, Emperor, and Enslaved household names within the metal community. With that being said, Twilight is indeed a fine example of that mindset and that metal demeanor. "Sunn 47" is a must have for any old school black metal fan, and maybe a must have for your average "know nothing" leatherneck like me.
