Company: Candlelight
Release: 2013
Genre: Death

COMMENTS:
Pestilence's first two comebacks burned a lot of goodwill, but third time's the charm as 'Obsideo' finally fits Mameli and Co.'s seasick riffing into a svelte modern framework. Neither pandering nor playground chug-core, it spans tech-death, angular prog/thrash, and enough sub-octave hooks to leave gaping wounds in one's brain. The tight yet beefy production also fixes the saggy guitars of the risible 'Doctrine'. Psycroptic's Dave Haley anchors a new rhythm section and his perpetual creativity is the ideal foil to Mameli's deranged soloing and bestial vocals. Their bad luck Gorguts returned in '13; otherwise this would have won more acclaim.
