Shines from start to finish
England's Savage Messiah have released their debut album, "Insurrection Rising", on Candlelight Records. The group were formerly known as Headless Cross and released an EP before making the transition into the proto-thrash act. "Insurrection Rising" is a great modern day power record that just shines from start to finish. The production certainly assists the band gain a few steps on others in their class (this probably sounds better than some of the big Swedish stuff) but the nuts and bolts is straight ahead pounding metal 101. The group display the velocity and smash of big mid-speed thrashers like Testament and post-"Wrecking Crew" Overkill for their rhythm punch and tight battery. Beyond that though the group incorporates a rich Swedish feel, with strong melodies and reflex booming a real Arch Enemy vibe. On some of the flashier cuts the band showcases some power meal feel, recalling fine Morgana Lefay or Firewind traits. The vocals are a little raspy, probably a turn-off for those looking for something a bit more clean-cut for role playing and Harry Potter. This is definitely a far cry from standard-volume-feedback power metal but still soaking in the same waters. Think of Death Angel and the above mentioned bands on a "frolic through the park".
