4.5-4 Great - Almost perfect records but there's probably a lacking.
3.5 Good - Most of the record is good, but there may be some filler.

2.5-2 Fair - Worth a listen, but best obtained by collectors.
1.5-1 Bad - Major problems with music, lyrics, production, etc.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

  • Definitely cinematic



    • Gather your battle armor folks, it's a medieval ride! This album's intro, "Kalachakra", makes me think of Therion, and that's not a bad thing. Casta, with its Latin, German and Russian lyrics, is definitely cinematic and something altogether different from metal normality. At what point would I listen to this deep culture album in a setting of say, the local coffee shop? Not that often. The Peter Steele styled baritone vocals are splashed all over the album to act as an instrument to strengthen the already meaty rhythm. By Crom the production is outstanding as every different arrangement can be heard with clarity that I would hope every band strives for. Even though I joke, which may mean that I like this, I still can't help but remember lines from the film PCU:

    Droz: What's your major?
    Sanskrit Major: Sanskrit.
    Droz: Sanskrit. You're majoring in a 5000 year-old dead language?

    In summation, get this if you want to feel like you're part of an action-adventure film.
