Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

4/5/2016 - Review by: Greg Watson
Continues the band's string of quality power metal releases
German power metallers Brainstorm return with 'Scary Creatures', the band's 11th studio album. 'Scary Creatures' is a solid piece of power metal and continues the band's string of quality releases. Singer Andy B. Franck has a strong voice and an impressive range, but the layering of vocals on 'Scary Creatures' can be a little much sometimes. Musically the album is one of their heavier offerings of late and provides some really strong tracks like "Where Angels Dream", "The World To See" and "Scars In Your Eyes". 'Scary Creatures' continues to prove that Brainstorm's formula is tried, true, and not to be messed with.

  • Still compelling enough

  • I’m not sure I have anything to add to this band’s catalog good, bad or indifferent. It’s Brainstorm. German power metal. Double bass with harmonized vocals that preach unity and defiance via huge sing along chorus pieces. It’s the bastard of Accept crossed with Gamma Ray…and it has been that same formula for eleven albums stretched over 20 years. Hell, the band is so seasoned and experienced they invited their own children to come into the studio and sing the gang chants with them. True story. Look it up. Regardless of the well-worn path, ‘Scary Creatures’ still packs a wallop. “Where Angels Dream” provokes those Teutonic rages like a Grave Digger and Rage, Andy’s vocals still perfect and soaring with dramatic clarity. “Twisted Ways” and “Scars in Your Eyes” follows the same path and therein lies the problem. Its cut and paste on just about every album but the vocal melodies, production and addictive verse, verse, chorus, verse, verse, chorus, big solo, chorus repeat twice and finish big is still compelling enough. Love the album cover. I’ll take it in XL black cotton.
