It's all one big screaming blur
A Swedish band named after a wrestling show, The Smackdown has been around since 2001. Their first demo album was just 5 songs but quickly caught the attention of Coalition Records and in November of 2002, they rleased their 7" viynl. VINYL!! Another CD followed in 2005 and just a few weeks ago on, The Smackdown released the present album, Someone Has to Kill the Headwriter. It is like nothing I have ever heard before.
The first glance at the titles will lead you believe this is a heavy metal Motley Crue-influenced band. Instead it's the opposite, even the review on the bands own site admits that this album was not planned, it was merely to release another album. And it shows, except for a slight pause in between the songs that it's all one big screaming blur.
The guitar licks here are fast-paced and raucous backed by ear-splitting vocals that may or may not be in English. Their riffs are allegedly stolen from Motley Crue, Slayer, Breach, Black Flag, Black Sabbath and Big Black, admittedly by the band. Trust me, they sound very little like any of the aforementioned bands. And even if you could understand the lyrics, if it's the ones written on the cover, they wouldn't make sense. So, I guess Smackdown is one of those bands that caught the coattails of the rise in this kind of music in this country, and they put on a great show; that's all that matters right?
