Italian prog rock with an elaborate sound and overarching themeThe new album from the Italian prog rock band Kingcrow, "Timetropia", demonstrates that more is coming out of Italy than great leather goods and fine Italian sauces. Common to the genre of prog rock, Kingcrow employs a collection of unified tracks with an elaborate sound and overarching theme. Most of the tracks are sinuous and sophisticated in their execution with a bit of a 90s flavor that leaves a melodic taste behind.
Comparisons to Styx, Rush, Kansas, Queen, Queensryche and Savatage have been made and there is validity--but Kingcrow’s vocalist Mauro Gelsomini is distinctive enough in his delivery to still give the band a signature sound all of their own. Standout tracks include "Realusion", "Fractured" and "A Hitchhiker".
Technically, the overall result is melodic and slightly classical in its presentation--2008’s answer to an Italian Opera. A plugged in Giuseppe Verdi would be proud.
