Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

  • Nostalgic dose of speed metal and thrash

  • Tyranex was a name unknown to me before I listened to their sophomore album, 'Unable to Tame', but after listening to it, Tyranex may not be unknown for long. Hailing from Sweden, Tyranex deliver a nostalgic dose of speed metal and thrash. Vocalist and lead guitarist Linnea Landstedt is equalparts Dave Mustaine, Bobby Blitz and Kurt Vanderhoof. With that cocktail in the form of Linnea, the band is rounded out by Per Lindstrom on bass and Johannes Lindstrom on drums. This trio shows that they are huge fans of old school thrash in the vein of Kreator, Agent Steel and Metal Church to name a few. Tracks like "Bloodlust and War", "Witches Gathering" and "Victims" could all easily have been songs crafted by any of the previously mentioned bands and have a sound that still keeps them relevant in today's metal world. Landstedt's guitar prowess is impressive as she shreds and rips her way through each track. Her speed and technical precision is just freaking awesome and she could easily hold her own against any of her peers. The Lindstrom's handle the back end well, providing staccato drumming and galloping bass lines that hold everything together like woodworker's glue. The production on the album is a little muddy at times but works well with the style of metal that Tyranex are playing. Fans of old school, no bones about it metal should definitely give this album a spin.
