Something a little different
Pennsylvania's Divine Tragedy offer up a rather interesting listen with "Viscera Reaction". With a sound that is as multi-faceted as the vocals are, "Viscera" takes the listener on a varied aural journey that hits thrash, death, hard rock and old school metal-tinged stylings. The band reminds me a bit of White Wizzard or Holy Grail at times. While I enjoy this style, the songs tend to get a little predictable as you listen through the album. The musical abilities of the band members is pretty impressive and wide ranging, with speed metal type solos on guitar as well as classically influenced passages, galloping bass and thundering drums tempered with slow, steady plucking on the bass and an almost jazzy feel to the drums at times. The one head scratcher on the album though is "Flesh and Blood" which is an electronic tinged track that just feels very out of place. The production on the album is a little low at times and I feel with a more fullness, the album would really come together quite nicely. I would definitely check out another album by this band and would recommend giving this one a listen if you're looking for something a little different from the typical metal that's out there these days.
