Retro rock is back in a big way. While absolutely terrible bands like The Darkness and White Stripes are probably the leaders of this rock revolution, it is the really great bands like Danko Jones, Mother Misery, Crash Diet, and Overloaded that seem to be swimming just off the main shoreline. They aren't getting the respect or the audience that they deserve, and I really find that disheartening. I enjoy this bare bones, stripped down rock and roll attitude, and I appreciate the great effort that goes into being "retro rock". Simple is sometimes better, and that is really what you get with these types of bands. It makes music fun and enjoyable again, and that is much needed in this time of angry, hardcore mosh pits.
Australia's Doomfoxx joins the dance hall with their debut record for Armageddon Music. It is a bit odd to see a rock band on this label, but lately Armageddon has shown some interest in the hard rock genre (Victory comes to mind). With Doomfoxx the band present to us pure party attitude. Don't get confused, this is NOT polished, slicked up hard rock. No, this is rock and roll that really pre-dates that L.A. Sunset Strip sound. Doomfoxx is probably more in line with the likes of Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, and AC/DC. The band are about simple, catchy guitar hooks with sex, booze, and party vibes with their songwriting. The band really do this sound justice, offering up twelve great cuts highlighted by rockers "Piece Of Me" and "Schoolboy Adonis". On top of the great music, the band has a great sense of humor!
