Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Hailing from Malaysia, BREAK THE SILENCE are another band being pushed by South Asian label Demonzend Records. I should clarify straight away that they have nothing to do with their namesakes who are based in Chicago! The sound of this BTS could be pidgeon-holed as Death Metal with a Punk-like attitude, that seems inspired by Deicide and Dying Fetus amongst other bands.

For the uninitiated, "Merciless Mercenary" is the band's debut album, after having released a demo in 2003. BTS was formed at the turn of the millenium and the line-up we find here features: Dol Deathgrezzor (bassist and founding member), A. P. HellThroat (vocals) and Hezree Flix (drums).

"Merciless....." contains 11 tracks (besides album intro and outtro) of brutal Death Metal of the type that has been done several times before. Which isn't bad really if you happen to be in the right mood. However, the main problem with "Merciless....." lies within the production quality, especially of the drums. For example producing the snare drum is a notoriously tricky job for most producers, but you've got to get the drums right before anything else in this darker half of the metal planet.

Lyrics are a lethal concotion of Gore and Black Metal. Again, all the sweet stories we've heard beforen - if you consider cyanide as sweet that is!

"Merciless....." contains a few great songs but overall rarely goes beyond 'interesting'. Do BREAK THE SILENCE have any hidden aces up their sleeve? We'll wait and see. At this point, basing myself on "Merciless Mercenary", I reckon the band could do worse than developing a more personal style, working on tighter compositions and improving the sound of their recordings.

My Rating: 6/10
