Enter the Cowboys from Hell
On the anniversary of Dimebag's death, I think it's time for a short history lesson.
Back when the 90s were starting, the new marketing darlings of Grunge were sweeping away all of the leftover glam bands that had collected like dust bunnies under my bed; most being 3rd and 4th rate imitations of Crue, Ratt, Poison, Warrant, etc. You can still find them touring around some bars in the Midwest, but back then it was one rock style replacing another in the media. Die, poseurs, die!
In the Underground, where the mutants dwell, Metallica and the Thrash band kings had been kicking around for so long that most had grown long in the tooth also. They were "Metal lives forever!" but, hey, it still got old just like the NWOBHM bands did. Black and death metal were off diddling their tweeters in their own world, so they aren't factoring in here.
It was time for a new sound.
Enter the Cowboys from Hell--Pantera. The name alone is damn cool...Pan-ter-a.
Quickly they became the band to admire with a aggro-groove that sounded immensely heavy thanks to the foundational fretwork laid down by Dimebag and the growling aggression of vocalist Phil Anselmo. '3 Vulgar Videos from Hell' is a great collection for the uninitiated to experience the phenom that the band was back in the day. Pantera was spoken of in profound terms back then and if you look at any Top Metal Band Ever List you'll see the band way up there, a testament to their lasting appeal. Eventually, they split up, fans were pissed and we're where we are today.
I'd give this one a higher rating if you really learned something about the individual guys beyond what was filmed which consisted mostly of spirited, boys-will-be-boys goofing off--destroying stuff, drinking', chicks flashing...wasted days and wasted nights. You should get at least the first couple early CDs to get a fuller experience of the band and the music, but 4 hours worth on this dvd is a hardy start.
