Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Powergod - Bleed For The Gods (That's Metal - Lesson I) - reviewed by: Nailer

Heavy Metal 101 is now in session class, and Powergod is your instructors.

Now, this is a cool CD. Thrash and power metal songs redone by some guys with respect for their elders and out to have some fun. "Bleed For The Gods (That's Metal - Lesson I)" is a damn good listen with a really killer live, loud sound. President Evil's vocals are a cross between ex-Anthrax vox Joey Belladonna and Eric Adams from Manowar giving him a nice range to work within.

Let's open the Book of Song:

Chapter 1. Lion's Roar/Bound To Be Free (SAVAGE GRACE) - vintage Maiden for the first minute then awesome thrash.

Chapter 2. Bleed For The Godz (AGENT STEEL) - another killer thrasher.

Chapter 3. Metal Church (METAL CHURCH) - mid-tempo, menacing cover from an under-rated group.

Chapter 4. Ruler Of The Wasteland (CHASTAIN) - good late 80's number.

Chapter 5. Kill With Power (MANOWAR) - As big as any power metal you can get. Charge you like a locomotive

Chapter 6. Stars (HEAR'N'AID) - remake of a Dio project from 1985. Nice sounding, but some odd vocals. Even has mutiple guitar solos.

Chapter 7. Burning The Witches (WARLOCK) - power metal classic with Doro herself on some vocals. Great one.

Chapter 8. I'm A Viking (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN) - maybe a little slow for this disc. The tone and vocals remind me a lot of Black Label Society.

Chapter 9. XXX (NASTY SAVAGE) - maybe the heaviest on here.

Chapter 10. Steel The Light (Q5) - not bad, but a bit off pace with the rest.

Chapter 11. Tor With The Hammer (TNT) - Big, harmonized power metal. Infectious as hell.

Chapter 12. Madhouse (ANTHRAX) - It's old Anthrax...nuff said.

Chapter 13. Metal Merchants (HALLOWS EVE) - more good thrash

Chapter 14. Red Rum (LIZZY BORDEN) - Great 80's style metal. Kicks you in the ass and writes your name down for another kick later.

Chapter 15. Soldiers Under Command (STRYPER) - Ok, but a bit weak for this CD.

Chapter 16. You And I (M.A.R.S/DRIVER) - wouldn't be complete without a power ballad.

Some of these songs may be even better than the originals and I wish this kind of stuff would come back around. Hell, I even made my own list of songs I think should be on Lesson II:

Iron Fist - Motorhead
White Witch - Savatage
Evil Eyes - Dio
Purgatory - Iron Maiden
Blood and Iron - Overkill
Save the Skull - Heathen
Who's To Blame - Sacred Reich
AC/DC - Sweet
Children of the Grave - Sabbath
The Mob Rules - Sabbath
Hail & Kill - Manowar
Beyond the Black - Metal Church
Dance of the Dead - C.O.C.
Sorry?! - Suicidal Tendencies
