Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

11/15/2018 - Review by: David Loveless
Funeral Doom legends dominate with their brand of gothic inspired dirges
With a career spanning nearly 25 years, Evoken has easily become the most consistent and haunting band in the funeral doom sub-genre. Although they do not release albums often, you can pretty much expect a near masterpiece every time. 'Atra Mors' was my 2012 Metal Album of the Year and although there have been some killer releases this year, 'Hypnagogia' just may be my MAOTY for 2018. Evoken has mastered a formula that just seems to works for them-- gothic-infused funeral doom with the occasional speed riff thrown in. Not to mention, the songwriting on 'Hypnagogia' is impeccable, which makes listening to all of these tracks extremely enjoyable. Songs such as "Valorous Consternation", "Schadenfraude", and "The Weald Of Perished Men" are all very different but very much represent what Evoken is all about. One of my favorite tracks, is the 3 minute 54 second instrumental title track. Although a song length this short would normally be considered a filler track on an Evoken album, "Hypnagogia" is an amazing song with a beautiful riff and haunting keyboard melody. If you're a fan of funeral doom, this is definitely the album for you. For everyone else, this is the album that I recommend you listen to if you're interested in getting into funeral doom. There is a lot to explore on this album and a true listening experience will take you to places you never knew existed!
