Old school Metal sound glossed over with a modern touchIf you're craving the old school Metal sound glossed over with a modern touch consider Powerdrive and their debut disc FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
Formed by Miguel Gayarre (Rhythm Guitarist/Backing Vocals) of Madrid, Spain and Robin Lundrgen (Lead Vocals/Lead Guitarist) of Stockholm, Sweden respectively. Not surprising when you consider the current crop of this brand of Metal is coming from overseas and especially from Sweden ushering in their own version of a New Wave Of Heavy Metal.
The first track that truly hooks you in is evidently the first track called 'Final Chapter'. A song that will have your feet doing double kicks and keep you listening for the remainder of the album. With it's blend of Miguel's growl and Robin's chops resembling that of the screamo shred of Sebastian Bach. In the mood for crunchy guitars that bleed deep grooves? Give the tracks 'Laid To Rest' 'Treat'...with it's well laid chrous woven into a rich melody...and 'Starting Over' a listen. On tracks like 'Self-Determination' 'Blast' and 'Dead Silence' sessions of headbanging will ensue with it's double guitar onslaught layered unto blistering break neck solos. While the feel on most songs is garnered towards traditional Metal the over use of distortion is evident.
At times it's seems like Robin is tuned into the spirit of the late Layne Staley's monotone moodiness. As evidenced on the standout track 'Silver Bullet' a song dedicated to fallen Metal heroes like Dimebag Darrell. It's a track that is sure to send goose bumps up your spine for sure! Yet on every track it's a fine line Robin walks and show his tremendous range vocally.
Currently Powerdrive are back in the studio doing a follow up. If it's anything like their debut it's proof that the future of Metal is not necessarily going forward or going back but finding a delicate balance in between
