Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Solo bm that is incredibly intense and varied from standard bm
Another solo black metal project...seems to be the new trend these days. Rimthurs album 'Gravskrift' is a very interesting and complex beast. While it begins innocuously enough with the traditional "angry bees" guitar sound, it quickly becomes evident that this is going to be anything from your standard black metal. The varying layers that are woven into an incredible musical tapestry alone make this album very fascinating but then when you throw in the varying pace and vocal delivery and top it off with some really cool lyrics, you just begin to see the scope of what Rimthurs is trying to achieve with this release. This is not an album that you can listen to once and glean every nuance from, this will require multiple listens to be able to really grasp everything that the album is meant to be. I have already listened to this one through several times and continually find myself discovering layers that were previously missed. The sheer creativity on this album makes this release something unique and incredible and worth the time to listen to. If you are a fan of so called "trve" black metal, don't waste your time with this because you won't be able to appreciate what Rimthurs is doing here. However, if you are open to black metal that deviates from the traditional somewhat and like exploring an album and all it has to offer, you won't be disappointed with this one at all.
