Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Casus Belli is a great power metal band from Greece, who have just released their sophomore effort called "In The Name Of The Rose", a phenomenal guitar driven epic piece that should please fans of Firewind, Dream Evil, and Messiah's Kiss. Led by the talented frontman Panos Dedes and the guitar god Panos Arvanitis, Casus Belli are well on their way to global recognition within the metal community. "In The Name Of The Rose" embarks on eleven strong, healthy cuts that are mostly mid-tempo, powerful slabs with huge solos and and a fast double bass arrangement. Each cut is just bombastic in delivery, each built on catchy chorus lines and quick, melodic signatures.

The band originally recorded a demo in 1998 with the help of Rage mainman Peavy Wagner. That collaboration probably opened a few doors for the band, and soon after the band released their debut record "Mirror Out Of Time". A brief hiatus went in effect after the release and singer Panos Dedes tried out for the vacant Judas Priest slot. He was asked to send in another, more powerful song and was rejected after that. It is really unfortunate as Dedes is a fantastic vocalist with plenty of range. Thankfully Casus Belli went back into the studio and the end result is a fantastic power metal record that hopefully will lead to more recordings.

Favorite Cuts - "Vengeance Is My Law", "Eastern Dance", and "Edge Of A Knife".
