With the international success of retro-rockers Wolfmother, the musical era of the late 60s to the early 70s was championed for the millennium generation. New entries this year from The Lizards and Gentlemens Pistols have come along to join in the joys of oldster rock. "Gentlemens Pistols" is a populist release. You really can't deny an expected mass appeal with the majority of the selections covering mid-paced, catchy grooves broken up with the breakdown speed of "Out of the Eye" and the excellent "Vivid Wonder"; and the slinky dirge of "Heavy Petting" with implicit entendres recalling Zep's "Custard Pie" and "Trampled Underfoot". There are no musical risks with GP; all of the songs are prepared for modern digestion--riff jamming opportunities that could extend on are kept leashed tight and guitar solos and fills blend in musically without pulling us away from the grounding rhythms. There are no real risks here that expand upon what's been done before. GM doesn't have the dynamic light and shade of past masters yet, but these youngsters do show that there is plenty of life left in an older style. Maybe we'll get a "Layla" or a "Stairway" out of subsequent releases.
