Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

A slightly harder edge though not exactly metal
Being familiar with the 60's originals (Steppenwolf, The Mindbenders, Johnny Kidd and The Pirates respectively) and even some of the cover versions of the listed songs on this Uncle Light EP, I didn't know how much I wanted to even hear it. The guitar leads in "Shakin' All Over" always rubbed me the wrong way. Thankfully, this EP was a pleasant listen.

The tracks have a slightly harder edge though not exactly metal or even Poison-level hard rock, they are electrified up to a degree. The main selling point for the EP for me was the comfort that the band plays the numbers. They nicely walk the line between being overwrought and loose without sounding like hired wedding-band performers. It's slightly infectious enough that you may find yourself humming along some of the melodies like I did. Only thing missing for me was the absence of some backing vocals. I think they would round out the songs even more.

It's a good listen that shows Uncle Light's style. Only question now is how well they can do on some originals?
