Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

  • These Canadians are brilliant, heavy, talented and write catchy songs



    • Cauldron are burning hot with this sophomore effort "Burning Fortune". Many readers will remember my fondness of these Canadians last year with their debut "Chained to the Nite" and my ranting and raving of their importance in today's stalling retro scene. I love these guys and their hard work and dedicated effort to spawn glorious pure-blooded metal licks to the masses. We can throw retro or reimagined verbiage all over "Burning Fortune" but at the end of the day this is timeless heavy metal, free-spirited and sure fire brilliant in its endeavor.

    This is more in the vein of Scorpions and Warlord, that vibrant 80s metal magic that feels so damn good yet still sensible enough to stray a new course and develop their own identity. Production-wise this is hi-fi and fuzzy with arena drumming and some serious treble on the chords. The opening riffs of "All Or Nothing" reminds me of Warlord's "Child Of The Damned" while other cuts nail George Lynch and the Schenkers. I can't stop with "Miss You To Death" and its damn near perfect fit for Scorpion's "Blackout". The vocals are even pitched and fit the blue collar work ethic of the 70s and 80s but wouldn't be out of place in 2011's Euro scene. What a perfect tribute to Cauldron's 80s counterpart with an ode to Detroit's Halloween on cover "I Confess".

    Another solid effort and the perfect solution to the sophomore curse--make a second great album. These Canadians are brilliant, heavy, talented and write catchy songs that do just enough to pound the metal boards. Classy.
