In the eleven years of their existence, A Forest of Stars has released four very respectable releases up until 'Grave Mounds and Grave Mistakes'. So, going into this, I had extremely high expectations. Thankfully, those expectations were met and exceeded, as this is a monstrous album. Not only does it clock in at over an hour, it features some of their best songwriting to date--boldly blending post and black metal with gothic overtones. The vocals also standout, as they range from Akercocke-like spoken word to full on BM vokills. Although every track is excellent in its own right, some of my favorites are, "Persistence Is All", "Children Of The Night Soil", and the strangely innovative "Premature Invocation". There is a lot happening on this album, so fans of traditional heavy metal may not get it (or like it at all). However, if you're a fan of Akercocke, Primordial or early Anathema, I would highly recommend picking this one up.
