Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Man I wonder what goes through Yngwie Malmsteen's mind as he's chosing a singer? And why does he keep them for an album or two and then get rid of him only to bring them back a few albums later?

Anyways, Mark Boals is a damn good vocalist, there is no doubt about that. It even appears that he has picked up some guitar knowledge from the "Swedish Shredder". Edge of the World overall is pretty good. It has it's bad moments, like some albums, but I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.

There is a lot of musicians that help out Boals on his CD most notably Tony Macalpine of Planet X and Vinny Appice formerly of Black Sabbath. Boals voice sounds as good and as strong as when he first started with Malmsteen with Rising Force. "Lady Babylon" and "Garden of Pain" are the two tracks that stand out most to me. They just have some great guitar work and Boals really cuts loose with his vocals. The only song I really didn't get into was "Up To You", a slow ballady type song. Just not a lot to say about it. But overall this was a good CD.

I haven't heard his previous release, "Ring of Fire", but if it is anything like this disc, I will definitely check it out. I wish good luck to Mark Boals in his future endeavors. Check out this CD if you are a fan of Mark Boals, and even if you're not, give it a shot...you might be pleasantly surprised.
