Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

I don't get this band. I'm a huge fan of the first two Racer X albums, "Street Lethal" and "Second Heat". Those are top notch Judas Priest style power metal rippers. I listened to "Technical Difficulties" and felt that it was too modern, and bought the last effort, "Superheroes" and liked it pretty well. I just don't get the humor or the right vibe from this new offering however. Something just hits me the wrong way. It may be the way that "Getting Heavier" starts, with the first track, "Heaven In '74" being a laid back lackluster of a song, not really going anywhere and seeming to be just a "funny" intro to the record. The second track hits me about the same way, just really laid back and certainly not very lively. In fact, over half of this record pretty much sounds the exact same, just boring, bluesy and flat out irritating. The album's only saving grace are the good, old fashioned Racer X tunes like "Lucifer's Hammer", "Dr X" and "Endless". I also really like the Paul Gilbert show on instrumental "Catapult To Extinction". Mabye I've just lost touch with this band, but this album definitely isn't anything like the first two releases. If you liked "Superheroes", then mabye you will find some merit in "Getting Heavier". Fans who buy this Japan edition will also get a free "bootleg" live album entitled "Snowball Of Doom 2" That will make you feel better about spending $30, right?
