It has been fourteen years since Tom G. Warrior (Tom Fischer) has surfaced with a new Celtic Frost studio record. His time away from Celtic Frost has been spent with lackluster one-off projects like Apollyon Sun. Now the much hyped "Monotheist" album is here, with Warrior reuniting with Martin Ain, the group's original bassist who has spent time in Hellhammer during CF's hiatus. Joining the duo is new drummer Franco Sesa, replacing original skinsman Reed St. Mark and his replacement Steve Priestly. Thankfully the group's new PR photos aren't anything like the horrid "Cold Lake" pictures.
This record has an evil unproduced sound that is being complimented by Warrior's voice tone and delivery. His vocals here are dark, brooding, and spoken, comparable to the likes of Vorpholak's voice on "Rebellion" and "Passage". There isn't a whole lot of melody here, as the material just hits you in the face with heavy bass and guitars that sound rigid and uniform. Highlights of the album are lead-off cut "Progeny" and "A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh" (made into a video). It might not be a groundbreaker for metal itself but for the band it is. This is a decent comeback record and one that should allow the band some room to stand on for it's return to the current scene. Tom Warrior promises the best is yet to come.
Note - Rave reviews for the album came from notable metal artists like Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Joey Jordison (Slipknot), Mike Akerfeldt (Opeth), and Shane Embury (Napalm Death).
