The captains of pirate metal set sail with their 5th full length album!
I'll admit that Alestorm is an acquired taste. They proudly play pirate power metal and you either like them or hate them. As for me, I love them! I don't usually listen to power metal, folk metal, or anything in between but I'll make an exception for Alestorm. They are a special breed of pirates and at times sound like they are partying in a tavern below decks, while other times sound as if they are playing a gig with Venom or Cradle of Filth. Their 5th full-length album, No Grave But The Sea, is another impressive booty from the very depths of Davy Jones' locker.
The first track is a banger of a tune and gets right to the point of what Alestorm is all about. The next song, "Mexico", starts with an 8-bit sound intro and then blasts into the top party anthem of the whole album. Grab your tumbler of rum and sing along to these awesome lyrics: "Yo ho Mexico, Far to the south where the cactus grow, Tequila and a donkey show." The next few songs continue the party in typical Alestorm fashion and then comes 'Fucked With An Anchor". This song is hilarious as it starts out as an acoustic piece as Christopher Bowes sings, "Fuck you, you're a fucking wanker. We're gonna punch you right in the balls. Fuck you with a fucking anchor, you're all cunts so fuck you all." Next up is "Pegleg Potion", a faster song with a blistering intro riff with trumpets in the background. The album never lets up, all the way to the end of the last song, "Treasure Island".
If you like to party pirate style, then set aside 46 minutes and blast "No Grave But The Sea" while sipping on your favorite ale. What I love the most about Alestorm is that over the course of 5 albums, they never compromise their sound. The vocalist sounds like an actual pirate, the music is what you would want to hear when pulling into a foreign port and visiting the local watering hole with the urge to party all night--metal style. The production is exceptional and the album cover will certainly get you in the mood. Welcome to your new favorite party metal band!
