Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Works musically but lost me fast with pretty unimaginative lyrics
Back are the old-time satanic preachers for another sermon about biblical lies, devilish powers and other assorted tales of blasphemy. Acheron have been around for many years and have undergone numerous line-up changes but that has never stopped them from creating some hard-hitting death metal. I liken the sound of this release to what Unleashed and Entombed are doing lately as the disc has that old-school gritty tone and heavy, head-bobbing delivery. A sleek, crisp sounding production would have killed the mood, so they were smart on that count. A useless intro and even more useless closing tune/noise weren't such great ideas. I'm sure there's some deep, dark reason for that echoed, fork scraping against a glass sound they call "The 9'th Gate" but fellas...no one will EVER listen to it...so why bother? I find Acheron interesting as they don't rely on overly brutal arrangements like most genuine satanic bands do. The addition of some spaced-out soloing and female background vocals helps keep this disc from falling into the bottomless pit of the overly-mundane. This is probably as catchy and straight forward as devil metal can get. Good in that the message doesn't get lost in a barrage of extreme insanity but bad in that the music reveals all it has to offer very quickly.

Bottom Line: Their simplistic approach actually works musically but lost me fast with pretty unimaginative lyrics.
