Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band.   • A much more focused artistic display



    • Prominent Greek band Emerald Sun have released their third album to date with "Regeneration". The band aptly title this record as it is indeed a regeneration for the act. The group find themselves rebounding from the recent departure from Limb Music and the parting of ways with former vocalist Jimmy Santrazami. Now the band seem like they have a new confidence and a much more focused artistic display with this new release.

    The band have signed with Pitch Black Records for "Regeneration" and paired with new singer Stelios "Theo" Tsakirides. His unique voice is almost a cross of Gamma Ray's Kai Hansen and Primal Fear's Ralph Scheepers, an interesting combination considering that his delivery is very soulful and at times very melodic as opposed to some of the more aggressive singing in the European power metal craze. While fans of early Helloween, Edguy and Gamma Ray will really enjoy this band's endeavor others more rooted in the gothic and AOR sounds may appreciate this too.

    Cuts like "Theater Of Pain" and "Regeneration" are firmly planted in European metal tradition, a stirring and speedy run through early Gamma Ray and Helloween grounds with quick double bass and high vocals from Tsakirides. I can hear some of today's Edguy on "Speak Of The Devil", one of the more groovy tracks on the album. The band definitely isn't a far cry from some of the more humorous touches of the crazy Germans, evident with a guest appearance from Alvin And The Chipmunks on space epic "Planet Metal". My guilty pleasure of the year is probably the bonus track, a rip-roar cover of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For A Hero".
