Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Fantastic debut album from ex-Guns 'N Roses member
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t anxiously awaiting the release of this one. Steven Adler is known for his work with Guns ‘N Roses, notably the classic ‘Appetite for Destruction’ as well as both ‘Use Your Illusion’ records. His drumming was also found on two EPs by his Adler’s Appetite band. Now, things take a more professional approach with this full length album under the name Adler. The album is produced by Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Pilson/Lynch) and features guest appearances from Pilson, Slash (Guns ‘N Roses), John 5 (Rob Zombie) and Michael Lord. Arguably this is as good or better than his former band’s ‘Chinese Conspiracy’ but sequestered from that punch-drunk sound. ‘Back from the Dead’ is an exceptional album with an appreciable amount of quality tracks and moments. Title track opener sets the mood perfectly with the soothing voice of unknown Jacob Bunton. The track explodes into a mid-tempo revelry that carouses and roisters with energy and lifeblood. “Another Version of the Truth” is adroitly played commercial hard rock built on hook and harmonized vocals. The whole album is a pleasant surprise and another firm entry in what has become a rather fruitful career from Adler. Forget the drugs, jail-time and lawsuits for a moment and just appreciate what Adler has accomplished.
