Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Here we have an album full of live and demo tunes as well as a cover song thrown in for good measure. Severe Torture have spent a fair amount of time in my player so I was pleasantly suprised to hear how tight their live performance was. The band rips through their tales of barbaric butchery with percise execution and conviction, giving a flawless performance. As stunned as I was at the high quality sound and performance of the nine live cuts, I was left equally dry over the virtually in-audible crowd noise and minimal between song banter of their frontman. While the songs played out, I felt like I was listening to the band in full-on rehersal mode in front of a few casual onlookers. All in all the performance is what matters and Severe Torture deliver the goods and then some.

Adjusting to the demo songs for the second half of this release came much easier than I expected, especially with the impressive "live" sound still ringing in my ears. The cover of Pestilence's "Lost Souls" might well have been saved for last because it steals the show from a playing standpoint but it was fun hearing the raw versions of "Severe Torture", Lambs Of God" and the grand master "Taking Down The Descender" (on the other hand...maybe that was a fitting closer...what a MONSTER tune!!!)

A solid release to end a record deal but now I'm wanting to hear the new music even more. Fans of the band will lick their chops over this and anyone into extreme metal would do well picking this up as it's a good intro to what Severe Torture is all about.
