Teaming Willowtip Records’ grind heavyweights Kalibas, with Relapse’s own up-and-coming Rune, the new split album from Relapse showcases four new songs from each band, giving you a half hour of brutal grind.
Kalibas’ side gives you a sample of what you’d hear on their Willowtip debut, "Product of Hard Living", with brutal high and low vocals and technical guitar and drum work that result in sheer chaos. The only problem I could find was in the mixing. The bass doesn’t always come through well, which isn’t what you’d normally hear on a Relapse release. But outside of this, the Kalibas songs are awesome, although I didn’t think they were quite as good as their release on Willowtip. They have alot of groove, which is good, but nothing extraordinary stands out.
On the other side, Rune is a band that is relatively new to the scene. Their first song "Birds with Broken Wings" features some incredibly fast guitar work and some really impressive drumming. The vocals aren’t quite as sick as I would have hoped, but they still get the job done. The only problem is the final track, "For the Weary and the Sullen", an instrumental track that is merely random noise. I really didn’t see the point of adding this track to the album, seeing as how it doesn’t add anything to it or have anything to do with the rest of the CD. It sounds more like something you’d hear in the background from a Sci-Fi channel show. Despite that, Rune shows alot of promise, and I definitely look forward to hearing what they offer in the future.
The album as a whole isn’t the best thing in the world. The two bands mixed pretty well together, but it just seemed to be lacking something. A few production tweaks, and the Kalibas side could have been better. And if Rune hadn’t used that last song, their side would have been great. All in all, a good grind album...but not a great grind album.
