Well, the last time I heard from this band was in 1996 when Zoon was released and that was a good semi-thrash album. Now in 2006 with FIELDS OF THE NEPHILM most current release Mourning Sun the band has taken a slightly different approach, trance metal if you will. I'm not sure if you could really qualify this release as metal, making this album hard for me to identify with but that doesn't mean it has nothing to offer.
With several listens you can begin to sort through the layers of music found here and find some subtleties you don't get from the first impression. The driving guitars and rhythms of songs such as 'Straight To The Light' and 'New Gold Dawn' being the best examples here. The title track is also worth mentioning as a stand out track but may not keep your interest for the whole 10 minutes. The album as a whole has a real bleak feeling mixed with alot of melodic elements, though the music does become repetitive. McCoys vocals provide a nice contrast to the music and overall mood with his sometimes whispery and sometimes gruff sound. So kick back in a nice dark environment and let your mind wonder.
If you survive the journey this album has to offer you may be left feeling cold and alone, just as with most true Gothic styled albums. While Mourning Sun seems well crafted to the point of being almost an artsy metal experience its audience will be limited. This album is sure to appeal to fans of HIM, even MINISTRY and for that soundtrack/score lover out there. For other metal heads out there, this release will leave you wanting something with more beef to it.
