Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Another impressive offering from the leaders of symphonic metal
For those of you familiar with symphonic giants Epica, you know that when they put out an album it's going to be top notch. "Attack on Titan" is another quality release with a bit of a twist. All of the songs from the album are from the anime of the same name. For those of you metal heads that enjoy anime, I expect that you will be rather impressed with the work Epica has done in their interpretations of these songs. The original tracks were a really crazy mix of musical styles ranging from classical, metal, and J-pop to name a few. The fact that Epica was able to take these songs and rework them with such quality and panache while still keeping the integrity of the tracks true to the originals is damned impressive. Simone Simons shines again on lead vocals and her voice is stronger than ever, particularly on "Dedicate Your Heart". I am impressed as always by the production quality and the musical arrangements by the band and cannot wait for another full-length album of original material. But this is definitely something that will hold me over until that time arrives.
