Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

Reviewing this album has become a daunting task for me, mainly due to the fact that these guys are pretty much regional heroes in my small, but burgeoning local scene. When Epoch come to town, it's an EVENT, and these guys can fuck up a stage like a band several times their stature. Live, this band can't be fucked with.

Stylistically, these guys are spiritually akin to Absu. Like Absu, Epoch of Unlight play a very individualistic & intellectual occultic black/thrash hybrid. They have a unique lyrical vision all their own, avoiding typical metal cliches by focusing on deeper spiritual and philosophical issues. I'd consider them to be one of the most unique up-and-coming bands to come from the United States in the last decade.

All that said to bring us to the hard part. In comparison to Epoch's live show, let alone their 2001 album, "Caught in the Unlight", The new album just doesn't get across the total powerdrenched frenzy that this band is all about. I am puzzled, because the songs are REALLY good, and the new line-up is amazing.

The more I've thought about it, the more I'm convinced it's the production. No matter how much I EQ, everything sounds compressed and one dimensional. It sounds like I'm listening to really bad quality MP3s. Plus this album is in bad need of being re mastered, because the volume levels are REALLY low. ( All my bitching about production values is more than a bit ironic, because I completely
sucked Blue Meanie Studio's dick in another review I wrote awhile back...)

Getting to hear most these songs in the live setting recently allowed me to at least appreciate the potential of this album, because like I said before - the songwriting and performances are freakin' awesome. However, if I was in Epoch, I'd sue...
