4.5-4 Great - Almost perfect records but there's probably a lacking.
3.5 Good - Most of the record is good, but there may be some filler.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Ok, so I dont 'bone down,' myself, I dont think it's necessary to be a 'stoner,' to catch a major buzz off of this offering from High Times Records.

'High Volume' brings together fourteen of the most formidable artists in the stoner, sludge and doom genre.

Highlights [no pun intended] for me include:

'Willie Nelson' by Clutch.
The quirky stoner veterans out of Maryland stay true to form with a chunky, groove-laden tribute to one of country music's most enduring stars and his favorite, um...'herbal refreshment.'

'Falconstone' by The Hidden Hand.
Any stoner/doom fan worth their salt has to give props to the Godfather of the modern doom sound, Scott 'Wino' Weinrich. The man and his work, from The Obsessed and Saint Vitus to the more recent Spirit Caravan and now The Hidden Hand is a LEGEND!! This entry carries on in his fine tradition of distorted, fuzzed out, heavy guitar work and the distinct Wino-branded vocals.

'It Is That Way' by Corrosion of Conformity
Wow. This is quite a change from the 'Southern rock' sound the COC guys took on with their last album. COC have made change a habit... be it change of sound, change of vocalists, or change of record labels. Those of us who are long time fans of the band will find this an intriguing sneak peek at what the upcoming album has in store for us. Great stoner/doom riffage and Pepper Keenan's whiskey-and-smoke toned vox leads one to feel we've hopped a time machine and transported back to the early '90's... somewhere between the release of 'Blind' and 'Deliverance,' because this tune would fit neatly in that frame of COC's evolving sound.
