Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Where do you really start to even describe something like this? I will just say up front that I am definitely not an experienced extreme listener, just doing my part to bring the metal journalism to you, my beloved metal reader (and all that jazz). "The Unclenching Of Fists" is the fourth album from one of Portugal's largest metal bands, The Firstborn. I will say that the only other Portugal band I know of is Moonspell, and this band is nothing like that. Instead The Firstborn are a chaotic mix of ambient influences mixed with blast beats, death metal vocals, black metal vocals, keyboards, and a sitar.

The hardcore metal enthusiast will appreciate the fast, quick guitar fury found here, all of which is pretty fast romps with plenty of thrash elements. At times the band reminds me of early Sepultura crossed into another realm of experimentation. Obviously the band is very talented and skilled with their instruments, with precise and diverse playing across the board here. "The Unclenching Of Fists" is based on Tantric Buddhism, mostly based on the "Bardo Thodol". The album apparently took almost four years in writing and a full year of recording. The end result shows off a complicated and very diverse metal sound that should appeal to fans of the extreme.
