Solid old school thrash
Alcoholator's "Coma" is the band's debut full-length out on EBM Records. I was unsure what to expect from this band but I have to say I'm pretty damn impressed. Musically these Canadians are very technical and deliver some solid old school thrash with some melodies thrown in for good mix. The guitar hooks are very catchy and plenty of solos appear to please the guitarist in all of us.
Songs like "Catastrophic Violence", "Break the Wall" and their cover of Exciter's "Pounding Metal" allow the boys to showcase their chops and their love of all things thrash and NWOBHM. The singer has a mix of Tom Araya and Paul Baloff styles going on. Solos a la Kerry King and Adrian Murray pop up with some pretty heavy drums and grooving bass lines bringing up the low end. The production is solid and crisp, tying everything together in a perfect brew of metal!
I am glad I stumbled upon these Canadian lads. If you can get past the silliness of a few songs ("Liquid Thrash" and "Drink Beer...or Die Trying" are all about the band's affinity for beer), this band really delivers a good dose of old school thrash that will have you banging your head and raising a beer to the metal gods!
