I was a fan of Enforcer from the beginning, seeing them in the basement of a New Hampshire steakhouse (!) on their first US tour. There's nothing new about their sound, but they have always played thrash-tinged trad metal with inspiring verve. The departure of guitarist Adam Zars seems to have done little to alter their sound, with frontman Olof Wikstrand taking over his six-string duties. 'Death By Fire' solidifies the band's sound, combining the intensity of their first album 'Into the Night' with the melodic sensibilities of their second, 'Diamonds.' Closing cut 'Satan' is pretty forgettable, but the rest is an infectious NWOBHM-style joy.

Speed burnersSome changes in the Enforcer camp for their third album to date. "Death By Fire" is the third different record label for this young band, Nuclear Blast signing the successful group after stints on Heavy Artillery and Earache. The band has also parted ways with second guitarist Adam Zaars, vocalist Olof Wikstrand taking over the second string gig like he did earlier. This new effort is still Enforcer, old school metal written with a flair of Exciter, Overkill, early Metallica and the NWOBHM craze. "Death By Fire" seems more polished and melodic than the predecessors but still just as intense and passionate. Opener "Death Rides The Night" sets the tone with a lightning pace, followed in quick succession with speed burners like "Run For Your Life" and single "Mesmerized By Fire". The bass runs rampant like Steve Harris and the whole thing is soaked in melody and tight galloping riffs that Maiden would applaud. Is it original? Absolutely not but still the effort, musicianship and sense of pride is more than enough to make these Swedes extremely valuable and entertaining. Devil horns up and enjoy the nostalgia!
