Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

  • Always well constructed and enjoyable

  • Olof Wikstrand and company do it again!

It seems plenty of bands can play '80's-derived metal, but few can bring something fresh to the genre while respecting its traditions. For the fourth time, Sweden's Enforcer prove themselves among those precious few. Of course, there is little here that hasn't been done before. It's all in how they do it. Each Enforcer album maintains certain band trademarks while having a flavor that makes it distinct from the band's other releases, and "From Beyond" is no exception. This time around, the spice of choice seems to be a little more melody than exhibited the last time around (see"Undying Evil," the title track and "Farewell," with its elegant acoustic intro), plus the odd hint of divebomb-happy guitar heroics ("Destroyer"). "Below The Slumber" perhaps takes the melodic thing a little too far (those opening vocal lines- really?) and the ponderous closing epic "Mask of Red Death" is an experiment that narrowly evades Spinal Tap-ish collapse. The rest is never life-changing, but always well constructed and enjoyable.

    Keep it up, guys!

Swedish traditional metal outfit Enforcer are back with "From Beyond", a heavy dose of 80's, NWOBHM-infused speed metal that sounds like it was pulled out of a time capsule. Vocals, music, and production scream retro like a Castle Grayskull He-Man set with ripping tracks chock full of whammy bombing, frantic noodling and speedy solos. I found myself getting a little worn out as the album went on as the songs started to blend together. Overall, this is a collectable, nostalgic album for fans of metal's "Golden Era". But for the casual metal fan or those of us that are all over the metal tree, this one is better left unplucked.
