Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Flotsam & Jetsam is a band I have to say that I've never much cared for. Sure they spawned Jason Newsted and had a killer debut album with him, but they've been living off that past glory for more than a little too long now. F&J has had some good songs along the way, but I don't think they've had a truely consistent album since "Doomsday For The Deceiver".

With all that said, I still figured I'd give this one a shot. I heard some hype on this album like "Flotsam & Jetsam is back with their best in years!", but you know how that goes. You always hear that shit about any new album from a band that's been putting out bad albums for awhile.

When I put this on and heard the heavy riffing of the first song I got encouraged for a moment, but it didn't last all that long. Oh that heavy riff keeps going... and going... and going. In fact you hear the same few riffs over and over again through the entire album. This is a common problem with F&J. It just seems like they get one solid riff in mind and go 'Ok that should about cover the album'. When most listen to a thrash album they do it for a bunch of shredding riffs and this, like most of F&J's catalogue, just doesn't deliver. It's a shame they don't have a more creative guitarist really because the overall sound of the band and most notably the vocals are strong. Another annoying point of this album that's been present on their previous albums is the acoustic sounding, meandering parts which just go nowhere. Another thing a thrash album really doesn't need. I swear those parts suck the energy right out of this release.

So is this the return of Flotsam? Nah they were never really here in the first place. Talk about a flash in the pan band. There are a couple solid songs here like usual, but this is a band that should just fucking give up.
