Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Flotsam & Jetsam's first trip to Japan in their twenty year career is the subject of this Crash Music DVD. This, the first home video of the band's career, chronicles the band's performance at Club Citta in Kawasaki, Tokyo. The performance was filmed over the course of three days and features eight live cuts from the group and one bonus video for "Straight To Hell", lifted from their new album "Dreams Of Death" out now on Crash Music.

I've always had an ear for this Arizona band, really enjoying their first three releases and holding each in high regards when compared to the rest of their discography. This live DVD mostly features CLASSIC cuts from those first three albums, going back as far as their debut album with performances of "Hammerhead" and "Doomsday For The Deceiver". All of my personal favorites are included here, with the massive "Hard On You" and "No Place For Disgrace" being real highlights for me. Eric A.K. is a madman here, really stomping all over the stage and hitting those high notes on the early material covered here. The band of course doesn't just cover those three albums, stopping to cover "Me" from the "Drift" album as well as "Nothing To Say" from newer release "My God".

The quality of the DVD is certainly adequate but really nothing spectacular. The show itself is rather dim with some poor lighting. The camera angles and shots are done well enough to cover the whole stage from multiple angles. I really wish there were more close-ups, but for the most part this is really enjoyable. The sound here is absolutely perfect and really couldn't do anything different to achieve a higher level of entertainment.

Bottom Line - Flotsam & Jetsam are going through several "firsts". Their first trip to Japan, their first home video release, and supporting their first album release on Crash Music with "Dreams Of Death". I'm glad to see this band still recording and touring. This DVD release will hopefully gain the band an even larger audience and maybe catch some new eyes and ears.
