Despite a number of important line-up changes and various 'technical' hassles Labyrinth have surpassed a decade of existence and given birth to the band's 5th studio album, namely "Freeman". I must say that apart from a rather mediocre debut album "No limits" (1996), Labyrinth have always manged to offer quality Melodic Power/Speed Metal.
Having said that, I was positively surprised at "Freeman" which definitely reveals a band at their peak artistic maturity. Labyrinth seem to consciously avoid being pidgeon-holed and are striving to make song-writing personal business this time around. Tagging "Freeman" as Progressive Metal could in fact be considered an understatement.
For example there's the enigmatic "L.Y.A.F.H." which contains anything from Classical-sounding guitar licks to Nu-Metal riffs. Or Roberto Taranti's soulful style of singing which fits quite well with his high-pitched voice during various up-tempo passages. 'Malcolm Grey' and 'Deserter' are 2 such examples. Then there are songs with the pedal to the metal at the word 'go' such as 'Nothing New'. My favourite take, however, is 'M3' - fast, melodic and with a great song-writing structure.
"Freeman" possesses the qualities to enhance Labyrinth's position at the forefront of metal with Italian origins. Recommended.
My Rating: 8.5/10
