Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

Italian duo Big Tokyo takes their first steps in 2002 inspired by 80’s hard-rock.

Vocalist Mac (formerly member of White Sand now concerned with some solo projects) and guitar player Jessie J. Ghelma (Dirty Dreams, Majestic 12), both well known names within Italian underground outline, got together and wrote 6 tracks in the little space of one month.

“Keep I Loud” is without a doubt a really painstaking made demo: both the artwork and the audio quality are in no way inferior to international label productions. Opener “Bad Hair Era” discloses the guys technical abilities and takes the listener back in time until the end of the last track; the vocalist gives his best and Jessie J. introduces himself as a guitar virtuoso who’s indifferent to the lure of never ending solos and who’s not nosy.

Each song is free of banalities and perfectly fits the spirit of the golden age of hard-rock: Mac is without a doubt A versatile singer, the guitars are scratching and each chorus is the right place. The rest of the album hosts tracks with catchy hooks like “Sing Me A Song” and “Face To Face” (the last one ending with a gospel choir) and sweeps through bluesy piano ballad “Tell Me Why” and “I don’t care”, a Whitesnake "Slide It In" – inspired piece.

The only negative point is the excessive length of the last part of “She”, a classical ballad. The bonus track is a Japanese version of “Sing Me A Song”-- really funny! I wish they’ll play it live sooner or later…

This demo is highly recommended to both nostalgic eighties fans and any novice audiences!
