Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

Nothing much seems to capture my attention these days from the Death Metal genre like it used to. One of the forefront styles of metal has now sunken to mainly underground status, and it’s a shame. I think it’s due to a serious lack of motivation or creativity but whatever it is something needs to be done.

ESTUARY however has stepped in to bring new life back to it. They are not reinventing the wheel here but bringing back the elements that have been missing, such as the grueling drum work of Jesse Wilson and the thrash style riffing and twin guitar work of Ash Thomas and Brad Howard. ESTUARY will pummel you from beginning to end with their melodic/death/thrash. Front woman Zdenka Prado does her best Glen Benton impression, yet almost better than Glen, and the harsh backing vocals ala DEICIDE are present thanks to Ash Thomas.

This is one of the best Death Metal records I’ve heard in a long time. If more bands would incorporate what made Death Metal great back into their music this scene would rise again. Memorable melodies and great production make this a must. It captures the old school feel but with a melodic approach, a skillful debut.
