Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Once they were power metal, now synth-pop
The synth-pop of the 80s is really the biggest member of Battle Beast at this point. Now, two years removed from founder and co-vocalist Anton Kabanen, Battle Beast are evolving into a different band. The power metal persuasion of the prior records has deteriorated over time, replaced by this hybrid of AOR, power metal and posh. It sounds more Swiss than Italian, and less German in its Teutonic toppings. Songs like “Bringer of Pain” and “Bastard Son of Odin” kill it, but that speedy intensity is completely lost on three-fourths of the album. Color me completely and utterly confused with dance-pop number “Dancing with the Beast” and the commercial abundance of “Familiar Hell”. Maybe it’s a long-term thing or just exploratory as they figure out what to do. Note: “King For a Day” gang-chorus is similar to the Primal Fear song of the same title.
