Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

Brother Hawk is a two-man band with a tight instrumental arrangement that make for an intresting sound that can only be described as southern rock . David Fraley provides the rocking guitar riffs and smooth vocals while drummer Jimmy Jones adds in his pounding drum rhythms. All but one of the eight tracks on this sel-titled CD was written by Fraley and Jones with special guest William Clark and Doug Geist.

Starting off with a soothing blend of melodic traditional Native American flutes by William Clark, PEACE PIPE has a wonderful Native American sound that I really enjoyed, being the Native American Music fan I am. But then you're thrust into a track called GOD LOVES EVERYBODY that has strong drum and guitar riffs, almost sounding rock-ish. However, the lyrics aren't quite matched to the song, and they sound more country or 70's rock-a-billy. There is a strong Christian influence to be heard in a few songs and an underlying 'back-to nature' message. LET IT GO, attempts to rock out, but the motorcycle sound effects aren't very realistic; I actually thought the CD was messing up. TIME TO SAIL is a sweet love song about memories of a lover lost, which seems to be the tone for the entire album, sweet and a bit mournful.

Brother Hawk does have potential and all the makings of a great band; a southern rock band like Blackfoot or maybe Marshall Tucker. It just doesn't show very well on this album. The vocals seem a bit flat and more suited to maybe country, this was nothing to get excited over. But if you like the sounds of the late 60's early 70's then perhaps you should pick this up, but be warned this isn't for everyone.
