Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

It's good to see this made an eventual release considering that half of the band was gone due to internal strife. I've listened to each of Biomechanical's CDs from "Eight Moons" to "Empires of the Worlds" to "Cannabalised" and they have gotten more violent and punishing as they went along. "Eight Moons" was mostly progressive and introspective. "EotW" added more brutality to their output with songs like "Assaulter" and "Enemy Within". "Cannabalised" has gone over the edge that they previously set--way over. Closest metal I've heard to this style, which is a hybrid of progressive and thrash, is Strapping Young Lad's last couple efforts, Fear Factory and a lesser-known band named Outworld. It changes rhythm often and John K's vocals border on complete hysteria. The consistent comparisons to Phil Anselmo's growling should go away with John staying more to his higher ranges. Traditional metal usually has a steady rhythm or riff for the listener to focus and ground themselves on, but listening to "Cannabalised" is akin to grabbing at items in the midst of a tornado or maybe a multi-car pile up. This is very turbulent, decentered, extreme metal the majority of the way through. Simply, it's not for the weak.
