If you're looking for a little doom in your life...With the return of Daylight Dies, Progressive Metal/Gloom has arrived with their new effort. "Lost to the Living." Picking up where the band left off with their 2006 release Dismantling Devotion, Daylight Dies continues to progress and surpass their own doom filled metal accomplishments.
The production is on this is crisp – lush, melancholically honed to perfection through a combination of soothing and aggressive textures. There is an intoxicating alchemy of clean and distorted electric and acoustic guitars that mesh very well. This makes for perfect listening for late nights and stormy days. There are two singers in this band – Nathan Ellis and Egan O'Rourke which favor the stereotypical "Cookie Monster" growl that death metal is famous (or infamous) for. It also contains some clean vocals as well, but most of the time, the "Cookie Monster" prevails and enjoys the spotlight.
If you are looking for happy, feel-good escapism you certainly won't find it. If you're looking for a little doom in your life that's not completely suffocating and has a melancholic edge to it, check out Daylight Dies' Lost to the Living. You will not find material that is groundbreaking; anyone who has spent a lot of time listening to Katatonia, My Dying Bride, or Paradise Lost has heard plenty of plenty of CDs along the lines of what these North Carolina residents offer on Lost to the Living. Daylight Dies continue to be one of the American bands this is truly a step in the direction of mastering their genre and leaving everyone else in the dust.
